Description of Sligo Congregation
It’s a new day in the West! If you are thinking of moving into our area and are looking for a Church in which to worship and serve a warm welcome awaits you at Sligo Presbyterian Church so come and help us make the most of our new day!
Sligo traces its origin back to about 1250AD and records show that Presbyterian roots go back well over 300 years. Today the population of Co Sligo is just about a third of what it was in the 1840s with the Protestant population only a few percent. Nevertheless, the light that has burned for over 300 years and flickered weakly at times is burning more brightly today than it has for many generations. Greater prosperity in farming, new industries, particularly from the United States, a dramatic increase in tourism, coupled with a much more visionary and positive outlook by the population as a whole has enabled Sligo to become a vibrant community and one in which the Presbyterian Church plays an active part.
Our congregation, consisting of many nationalities and many people of nonpresbyterian roots could be described as an International Evangelical Church, teaching the word of God faithfully to all ages and seeking to bring the Christian message to bear on all aspects of the social and political and cultural life of the community. Sunday services are informal. The crèche, with televised link from the Church is available for children. Whether as a new resident or holiday maker come and worship with us. If unable to call on Sundays our home is directly opposite the Roman Catholic Cathedral, close to Hawkswell Theatre/Tourist Information Office, in a large area of green. The telephone number is 00353 71 9162337, mobile 086 0752137. Remember, it’s a new day in the West and we want you to be part of it!
Needs for Prayer:
As the commercial heart of Sligo grows and extends we find ourselves seriously contemplating moving our Church to a very suitable piece of ground, close to the Manse were we can have greater visibility in the community, carparking and modern up-to-date facilities for worship, Sunday school, youth work, community outreach, etc. Your prayers for God’s wisdom, guidance and financial provision for this project would be much appreciated.
Within 5 to 10 miles of Sligo what once were small, relatively insignificant villages are becoming small towns due to massive industrial and housing developments, leading to a substantial growth of the population on the outskirts of Sligo. Please pray that God will guide those with the gifts and talents needed to visit these housing estates with a view to introducing the work and witness of our Church to them.
Sligo’s Institute of Technology is one of the foremost educational establishments in Ireland with many thousands of young people from different parts of Ireland and European countries attending. This mission field on our doorstep is one which we would like to tackle. We need someone with University education, an understanding of the Christian faith from a theological point of view to come and develop activities that will reach out to not only these students but the students who attend our Grammar School in Sligo.
